Beginners’ Introduction to Mechanical Watches

The benefits of mechanical watches are tenfold for a watch enthusiast, as there is nothing quite like exploring and watching the movements inside of a mechanical watch. They have been made through years of experience and expert craftsmanship, and are a working piece of history and art!

If you think a piece of oil painting that fetches millions is nothing but a cloth with some paint spillling over it, then you might never able to appreciate why collectors spend huge amount of money on mechanical watches. Collectors have likened them to be like art. It's meant for appreciation not for time keeping.

Short History

Traditional mechanical watches were made with analogue dials (hands) and was based on the invention by Peter Henlein (1480-1542). It is made up of about 130 parts or more. These parts are assembled in the three main sections: the source of energy, the regulating parts, and the display.

What makes the mechanical timepiece special is that the number of parts varies depending on the function the watch has. Many collectors choose to buy mechanical watch that can record the phases of the moon, keep a record of the date, as well as record time on a daily basis.

If you were to pull a mechanical watch apart (which is not recommended unless you know how to put it back together again!), You would see a finely balanced internal working movement, complete with hairsprings, a gear train, and a balance wheel . These are the parts that enable the watch to record the time.

High Maintenance

If you are thinking of buying one, you should be aware that although all the springs and gears are charming and beautiful, they will require regular servicing. This can be quite expensive, as you will usually have to take it to a specialist watch repair shop.

Buying Swiss?

You should also be aware when buying any mechanical watches that some watches that claim to be Swiss Made only have a swiss movement. They are often built by other companies (eg Japanese companies). So check carefully that the watch is a true swiss mechanical watch before you buy it, if you intend on collecting these watches. A few Swiss watch movement making companies, including Valjoux and ETA (ETA was the movement manufacturing division of Eterna until 1932 when it split off and joined EBauches SA), make mechanisms that are found in many popular brands. History of Mergers and Acquisitions

In today’s business, mergers and acquisitions are regular occurrences. In fact, it happens so often that many consumers can’t keep up with the new company names or products. To continue thriving in our economy, companies have to grow and evolve, and that sometimes means the combination of two companies will work better for the general public and the companies involved. There are two general types of mergers and acquisitions. The first is the horizontal merger, and the other is the vertical merger. A horizontal merger is two very similar companies joining together to work as one. An example of this would be two telecommunications companies joining forces to offer similar services after the merger. While a horizontal merger is perfectly acceptable, there are many who frown on it because it can offer fewer competitors if they are located in the same market areas. When two companies merge to form one, consumers often find they no longer have a choice between two companies and must, instead, deal only with the one new company. Without the healthy competition between two companies, customer service may decline while prices skyrocket. Essentially, a monopoly is created and consumers may suffer.

A vertical merger happens when a client and a company merge. An example of this might be when a hot dog company merges with a hot dog bun company. Because both products are still offered and they work together, consumers get the products they need. A vertical merger does not eliminate the competition for a particular company and is therefore often seen as a much more welcome combination.

Mergers and acquisitions have been a part of business for hundreds of years, though they weren’t as prevalent as they are today. The first significant occurrence of mergers happened in the late 1800s and early 1900s, though the concept wasn’t new even then. Since that large wave of mergers and acquisitions, which has become known as the Great Merger Movement, there have been six more significant waves of merger and acquisitions. In most cases, the mergers are peaceful and welcome on the part of both companies involved. The 1990s saw several hostile takeovers, however. The years since 2000 have seen many international mergers and acquisitions, and this is changing the face of business. There is no doubt that these new overseas mergers and acquisitions will continue to alter the way we do business, and chances are that company takeovers and fusions will shape the global economy for several years to come.

Building SEO

I'm fairly new to blogging, I started at the end of October 2010 I believe. I started because because I wanted to promote the things I make but it has turned into something more than that, I find I really enjoy blogging. As a began this journey I started doing research on how best to promote and market. I have a bachelor's degree in marketing but I honestly do not know much about online marketing as I went to school 20 years ago. I keep reading about SEO, Search Engine Optimization. I had a general idea what it meant but I've been pretty foggy about the whole thing. I went to a sales and marketing conference yesterday and the meaning of SEO became clear to me so I thought I would share what I would find out in terms that would help people like me, who are not necessarily as intern savvy as a lot of people .

SEO is basically getting your name or your business's name on to the first page of search results when you do a search on Google and other search engines. The way you go about doing that is getting your name out as much as possible. For example, you have a blog or Etsy shop and you want people to find it when they search for your name or product, the way it will come up on the search engine is related to how much it is out on the internet. That's why you want to have a Facebook page, that gets your name out there, then when someone likes you it goes on their Facebook page, each time you SEO goes up a little bit. When you are on Twitter if people re-tweet your tweets or mention you, your SEO goes up a little. It's almost like building a pyramid. Something else I just read about is Google is now looking at how many links you get. So you will want to create content that people will want to link on their blogs or Facebook pages to raise your SEO. It does not happen immediately, I've noticed it takes around a month for Google to start finding you so do not give up if you do not see immediate results. I hope that helps, it helped me figure out how I want to get my name out there more and how I want to do that now that it's a little clearer for me.
